June 2019- 3rd year graduate student Paula Floyd won this year's USM Clinical Psychology Program Clinical Case Conference Award!
April 2019- 2nd year graduate student Margaret Bullerjahn received a 2nd place award for her oral presentation at USM's Graduate Student Research Symposium!
April 2019- The YSURB lab is 3/3 on members getting into graduate programs for next year! Latisha Swygert will be joining the Clinical Psychology PhD program at the University of Georgia, Japriest Jerry will be attending the MSED program in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at St. Bonaventure University, and Amber Slaughter will be training in the MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling program at the University of Alabama!
March 2019- Undergraduate RA Chester Moore has been accepted to the 2019 The National Institute on Drug Abuse - NIDA Summer Research Internship Program! For this nationally competitive 8-week program, Chester will work at the Indiana University School of Medicine working on a project called “Neural Response to Risky Decision Making in Youth at High Risk for Substance Use Disorder and HIV.”
March 2019- 1st year graduate student Lauren Burns received a Diversity Poster Award and 1st year graduate student Lydia Sigurdson received an Honorable mention award for their presentations at the Society for Personality Assessment Annual meeting.
December 2018- 2nd year graduate student Margaret Bullerjahn successfully proposed her master's thesis “Effects of perceived poverty & chaotic living conditions on externalizing problems in adolescents”
December 2018- Congrats to YSURB undergraduate research assistant LaQuitta Simpson, who was selected by USM's Drapeau Center for Undergraduate Research for two honors: She will receive funding to attend the National Conference on Undergraduate Research in Georgia and the Society for Personality Assessment annual meeting in New Orleans. She will present research from our lab at both conferences!
November 2018- Latisha Swygert, a senior undergraduate RA in the YSURB Lab and an Honors student, was selected to present at the Southern Miss Honors College Research Showcase! She described how she developed her Honors thesis on the impact of the Trump administration and current national politics on the well-being of African American college students!
October 2018- YSURB members and Ronald E. McNair Scholars LaQuitta Simpson, Japriest Jerry, and Amber Slaughter presented the results of their summer projects at the national McNair Scholars conference!

September 2018- We have a new paper in press! It is a collaboration with Dr. Chris Barry's Youth Personality & Behavior Lab at Washington State University, titled "Dimensions of adolescent narcissism: A variable-centered vs. person-centered approach," to be published in Journal of Individual Differences.
August 2018- The YSURB lab welcomes new doctoral students Lydia Sigurdson and Lauren Burns!
July 2018- Congratulations to McNair Scholars Japriest Jerry, LaQuitta Simpson, and Amber Slaughter, who all remained on campus this summer to complete independent research projects and additional training related to the program. They have all now successfully submitted their final papers for these projects!
June 2018- The YSURB lab, along with the larger USM Clinical Psychology Program, have entered into a contract to provide psychological assessment and intervention services at the Juvenile Drug Court where we've been conducting research. This represents an expansion from our program evaluation project into an intervention project. Rising 3rd year student Paula Floyd will be the extern at this site for the next year, and Dr. Charles will be supervising her work!
April 2018- Latisha, Amber, Japriest, and LaQuitta presented their research at USM's Undergraduate Research Symposium. Latisha's presentation was awarded 2nd place in the Individual at Home, School and the Workplace Division division!

March 2018- Latisha Swygert has been selected for the National Institute on Drug Abuse Summer Research Internship Program. Latisha will be moving to San Antonio to complete her internship at Dr. Charles' former lab from her postdoctoral fellowship, the Neurobehavioral Research Lab and Clinic at the University of Texas School of Medicine!
March 2018- Dr. Charles gave a talk titled "PAI-A Profiles & Associations with Institutional Misconduct Among Youths in a Military-style Residential Program" at the American Psychology-Law Society annual meeting in Memphis, TN. See Dr. Charles' presentation here.
March 2018- Dr. Charles has been awarded an Aubrey Keith Lucas and Ella Ginn Lucas Endowment for Faculty Excellence Award! This endowment was established in honor of Dr. and Mrs. Aubrey K. Lucas to support and reward faculty excellence in instruction and research at USM. Dr. Charles will use the funding from the award to implement a project designed to reduce adolescent substance use in the local Hattiesburg community!
February 2018- Congratulations to undergraduate YSURB members Amber Slaughter, Japriest Jerry, and LaQuitta Simpson on their admission to USM's Ronald E. McNair Scholars program! All three students will receive a stipend to stay on campus in the summer to complete independent research projects in the lab and to prepare for the GRE!
January 2018- Dr. Charles has been selected as one of 10 recipients of a 2018 CE Workshop Grant from the American Psychology-Law Society. This grant will cover her registration for the "Translating Evidence-Based Assessment to Forensic Practice with the MMPI-2-RF" workshop before the AP-LS meeting in March!

The award will fund her trip to Minneapolis in April to present "Borderline traits, distress tolerance, and non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) among at-risk adolescents" at the Society for Research on Adolescence meeting in Minneapolis, MN!

October 2017- Congratulations to Latisha Swygert and LaQuitta Simpson, who are both 2018 Psychology Scholars. This program is an intensive mentoring and grad school preparation program that only accepts approximately 2% of Psychology majors at USM!
September 2017- Congratulations to YSURB member Latisha Swygert, who was accepted into two programs that aim to diversify the field of psychology at the graduate school level. Latisha will be traveling in October to both the University of Minnesota's Diversity in Psychology Program and the University of North Carolina's Diversifying Clinical Psychology Weekend. We're so excited for Latisha!
August 2017- The YSURB lab will be participating in a multi-site, NIDA-funded RCT of a program to reduce sexual violence and substance abuse on college campuses. We're excited to get started on this new project!
August 2017- Dr. Charles has been selected as an NIH LRP program ambassador! The NIH Loan Repayment Program (LRP) Ambassador Program is a network of former and current LRP awardees that promote the NIH LRPs within the scientific community. These are great awards that support researchers by helping pay down their educational debt. Dr. Charles is grateful for her experience as an awardee from 2012-2016 and she looks forward to helping future applicants to the program!

May 2017- The newest edition of Society for a Science of Clinical Psychology's Clinical Science Newsletter features a summary of the work Dr. Charles and collaborator (and USM Clinical Psychology faculty member) Dr. Joye Anestis conducted with their 2016 Varda Shoham Clinical Science Training Initiative grant. This grant funded a Dialectical Behavior Therapy workshop for our faculty and students and the initial implementation of DBT by our students in clinical and research settings.
May 2017- Bailee Brewer graduated with a BA in Psychology and a minor in Spanish, summa cum laude and with honors. She plans to work in the field before applying to PhD programs in clinical psychology.
April 2017- Bailee, Latisha, Angel, and Barbara presented their research at USM's Undergraduate Research Symposium. Bailee's presentation was awarded 1st place in the Behavioral Sciences, Children or Adolescents division and Latisha's presentation was awarded 2nd place in the Race/Ethnicity division!
April 2017- Dr. Charles is now a licensed psychologist in the state of Mississippi!
March 2017- Dr. Charles' proposed research on an intervention to reduce risky behaviors among low-income, African American adolescents was selected for the 2017 Center for Health Equity Research Institute at California State University, Long Beach. This summer program is funded by the National Institutes of Health and its purpose is to provide training and support for research proposal development and grant writing to early career investigators who are interested in health disparities and community-based research.
March 2017- Olivia Preston, a PhD student in collaborator Dr. Joye Anestis' lab, presented research comparing callous-unemotional traits and scores on the PAI-Adolescent version at the American Psychology-Law Society annual conference in Seattle, WA. See her presentation here: Olivia's poster.

January 2017- Barbara Gipson and Latisha Swygert were accepted into USM's new Psychology Scholars program, which focuses on graduate school preparation for high-achieving students.
December 2016- Bailee Brewer was selected for an Eagle Wings travel award from USM's Drapeau Center for Undergraduate Research. This award will pay her travel costs when she presents her Honors thesis results at the Southeastern Psychological Association Annual Meeting in Atlanta, GA in March!
November 2016- Angel Yarbor was inducted into the USM chapter of Psi Chi, the international honor society in psychology.
October 2016- ShaKyiah Saddler presented her McNair Scholar project, which involved the families from the Juvenile Drug Court study, at the 25th Annual National Ronald E. McNair Research Conference and Graduate Fair in Delavan, Wisconsin.
October 2016- A paper Dr. Charles co-authored with researchers at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio was featured in a press release by the Research Society on Alcoholism. It was also covered in an article on Bustle.com.
October 2016- Dr. Charles has been invited to join the editorial board for the APA (Division 1) peer-reviewed journal Review of General Psychology.
September 2016- The YSURB lab, along with Dr. Stephanie Smith's Childhood Neuropsychiatric Disorders and Electrophysiology lab and Dr. Dan Capron's Anxiety and Trauma Research Program lab, hosted a joint luncheon for lab members. See the Lab Members page for photos!
September 2016- Dr. Charles has been awarded a Society for Community Research and Action (APA Division 27) Community Mini-Grant. This grant will help support our research on the individual, family, and system-related factors that contribute to outcomes in Juvenile Drug Court.

May 2016- Dr. Charles and fellow USM Clinical Psychology faculty member Dr. Joye Anestis have been awarded a Proposal Development Grant from USM's Vice President for Research. This competitive award is given to faculty who are preparing an application for external funding. The funds will be used to support the DBT intervention at the boot camp and the development of a proposal for funding to expand that program.
May 2016- Carly Cannon (BS in Psychology, minors in English and Child and Family Studies) and Katelyn Daniels (BA in Psychology, minor in Education of the Deaf) have graduated from USM. Both plan to work in the field before applying to graduate school.

The funds from this grant will be used to support a Dialectical Behavior Therapy workshop for the clinical psychology doctoral program.
April 2016- Dr. Charles was presented with an Early Career Research Award at the 2016 meeting of the Southeastern Psychological Association in New Orleans, LA. She was chosen for this award based on her work using trait sensation-seeking and exposure to stress to predict adolescent substance use patterns longitudinally.
March 2016- Katelyn Daniels has been selected for the National Institute on Drug Abuse Summer Research Internship Program. Katelyn will be moving to Chicago for the summer to conduct research on HIV risk behaviors among IV drug users with Dr. Mary Mackesy-Amiti.
December 2015- Shelby Green graduated with a BA in Psychology, with honors. Shelby plans to stay on in the lab until the summer, and hopes to attend graduate school next year.

April 2016- Bailee Brewer, Katelyn Daniels, and Shelby Green presented at USM's Undergraduate Symposium on Research and Creative Activity. Shelby won 1st place in the Behavioral Science category!
April 2016- Bailee Brewer was inducted into the USM chapter of Psi Chi, the international honor society in psychology.
April 2016- Dr. Charles and fellow USM Clinical Psychology faculty member Dr. Joye Anestis have been awarded an SSCP Varda Shoham Clinical Science Training Initiative Grant. The funds from this grant will be used to support a Dialectical Behavior Therapy workshop for the clinical psychology doctoral program.
April 2016- Dr. Charles was presented with an Early Career Research Award at the 2016 meeting of the Southeastern Psychological Association in New Orleans, LA. She was chosen for this award based on her work using trait sensation-seeking and exposure to stress to predict adolescent substance use patterns longitudinally.
March 2016- Katelyn Daniels has been selected for the National Institute on Drug Abuse Summer Research Internship Program. Katelyn will be moving to Chicago for the summer to conduct research on HIV risk behaviors among IV drug users with Dr. Mary Mackesy-Amiti.
December 2015- Shelby Green graduated with a BA in Psychology, with honors. Shelby plans to stay on in the lab until the summer, and hopes to attend graduate school next year.
December 2015- Bailee Brewer has been accepted into USM's Honors College and will be completing her honors thesis in the YSURB lab.
December 2015- Katelyn Daniels' presentation "Aggression and Its Association with Risky Behavior in At-risk Adolescents." has been accepted to the CEPO/ Psi Chi Undergraduate Poster Session at the 2016 meeting of the Southeastern Psychological Association in New Orleans, LA.
November 2015- Carly Cannon and Katelyn Daniels were inducted into the USM chapter of Psi Chi, the international honor society in psychology.
